01 · About the Project

Verige, literally "chains", is the narrowest point of Kotor Bay, where history, heritage and contemporary life converge inside a UNESCO-protected landscape. Before our intervention the viewpoint was a forgotten curve of road: neglected, misused, and crowded with improvised stalls selling goods that bore no connection to the Bay's heritage.

This was no blank canvas. The site is a cliffed curve, precariously placed between the road and the sweeping expanse of the Bay, so the design had to be a negotiation between the inherited texts of the place and the writing of new ones. We reclaimed the curve and turned neglect into a landmark.

The architectural language is deliberate. Stone, tied to the region's traditional construction, forms the ground floor and anchors the building in the cliff. It is reinterpreted with modern precision, because conservation design is about transposition, not replication. Concrete complements the stone, and above them a pergola casts dappled shadows, nodding to vernacular architecture while serving a distinctly contemporary purpose.

In a view this dramatic every intervention has an echo, so a visual impact assessment shaped the building's position and form. The aim was resonance, not invisibility: clean lines and a restrained palette set against rugged cliffs, a quiet mediator between sky, sea and stone.

Now built and operating, it is a place to experience the stillness of being suspended between nature and culture, and a reminder that architecture is never neutral.
